A finite element approach to calculate corona losses on bipolar DC transmission lines

The corona power loss is a major consideration in the design of transmission lines. In the present paper, a finite element method with a charge simulation method was used to calculate the corona power loss in a bipolar dc transmission line configuration. From the simulated results, it can be concluded that the corona power loss decreases with an increase of conductor radius and bundle height above the ground. The simulated results show satisfactory agreement with measured values when the parameters are properly chosen.
