The insecticidal action of some sulfonamides.

Nine sulfonamides of medical and veterinary importance and 2 related compounds were examined for insecticidal activity by a tarsal contact technique. Four compounds (sulfanilamide, sulfaquinoxaline, sulfadiazine, and sulfacetamide) showed activity on filter paper at 5-10 g/m2. The 1st three and sulformethoxine (= sulfadoxine) were also directly insecticidal when fed to mosquitoes in sugar solution. Wettable-powder formulations of the insecticidal sulfonamides, with talc and sodium lauryl sulfate, also had good insecticidal activity, and as such may be useful in the treatment of wall surfaces in malaria control programs or as substitutes for chlorinated hydrocarbon, organophos-phorus, or carbamate insecticides.
