An Evolutionary WDM Upgrade for EPONs

In this paper we look at evolutionary upgrade paths to Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) on an Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) . We then propose a method for providing an evolutionary upgrade to WDM in EPONs. We specifically outline an extension t the MultiPoint Control Protocol (MPCP) defined by the IEEE 802.3ah committee to allow for the evoluti nary upgrade to WDM within an EPON. We also look at some methods for the Optical Line Terminal (OLT)to manage the bandwidth allocation in the now 2 dimensions (time and wavelength). We conclude with some simulation results and some suggestions as to how to extend this work to other Passive Optical Network (PON) types, such as an ATM Passive Optical Network (APON) .
