A Novel Approach to Providing Elaborate Virtual Block Storage Services in Cloud Computing

Persistent block storage (PBS) is widely applied in cloud computing, including Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS), Eucalyptus EBS, OpenStack nova-volume, OpenNebula iSCSI Datastore and Virtual Block Store (VBS) System which provides a more flexible framework compared with them. However they ignore some key issues such as elaborate volume service, data sharing and “hot” volume processing. This paper presents an EVBS model that is built upon VBS. In E-VBS, we provide six types of volume services to serve different types of customer requests and optimize the management of volume authority. We also develop a flexible method to address the issue of “hot” volumes in E-VBS. Our experimental results show that our services work effectively and efficiently.
