Respiratory Tract Clearance of Particles and Substances Dissociated from Particles

This report describes the clearance of particles and substances associated with particles deposited in the respiratory tract. It complements the report by Heyder (this volume) on inhaled particle deposition and the reports by Miller (this volume) and Andersen (1) on the deposition of inhaled reactive and nonreactive gases. Most of the information reported here was derived from studies using human subjects. Results of studies using laboratory animals are also described because some measurements cannot be made using human subjects and because it is necessary to compare respiratory tract clearance in people and animals for the purposes of toxicology and human health risk assessment.
