Abstract The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of phosphatidylethanolamines, phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylserines, and sphingomyelin are discussed in terms of molecular structure. The factors influencing the band width of the protons of the polar head of phosphatidylcholines are surveyed. It is found that the band widths vary with solvent and that this variation can perhaps be correlated with the micellar properties of the phospholipid. The dipolar ionic structure for phosphatidylethanolamines in solution is discussed in terms of nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared evidence.
