Thermal Neutron Capture Investigation of the 172Yb and 174Yb Level Structures

The energies and intensities of gamma radiation from thermal neutron capture in 171Yb and 173Yb have been determined by means of a Ge(Li) pair and anti-Compton spectrometer. Internal reactor targets have been used. The reaction Q-values, energies of excited levels and decay schemes of 172Yb and 174Yb have been deduced. The positions of the Kπ = 0-, 1- octupole vibrational states in 172Yb are discussed.
