Test Results on a Low Loss Amorphous Iron Induction Motor

The extremely low magnetic losses of amorphous metals motivated construction and testing of an induction motor stator using this material. A 1/3 horsepower, two-pole, 230 V, three-phase stator was built using the conventional approach of stacked laminations. Because of dimensional limitations of available material, the core was constructed with six 60°segments in each layer. Two comparison stators were made using 0.46 mm common iron and 0.36 mm M22 silicon iron core laminations.
