A critical review of current UK methods of masonry arch bridge load assessment is presented. The paper considers the criteria for assessment procedures and examines the results of recent large-scale experimental programmes, and the information these give on typical failure mechanisms. THe background to each of the methods of analysis which are being used for assessment of load carrying capacity are presented. These being the modified Military Engineering Experimental Establishment (MEXE), pinned-elastic, mechanism and cracking-elastic methods. The data requirements for the different methods are considered. Each method is judged against the selected criteria and conclusions drawn on their suitability for assessments. This paper excludes any direct consideration of the condition factor. (A)
