Seamless design-to-manufacture (SDTM)

Abstract This article presents a seamless design-to-manufacture (SDTM) methodology that can dramatically shorten design and manufacturing cycle times within the paradigm of concurrent engineering (CE). This article also identifies the need for a software-development environment that enables the creation of a set of software building blocks and their interconnection to form concurrent SDTM systems. The expert system generator (ESG) and the server network generator (SNG) combine to form such an environment. Two existing SDTM systems are described that demonstrate concept-to-manufactured-part in 48 hours for complex designs. They illustrate rapid design and manufacturing cycles that are feasible through the SDTM methodology.
