Finite element trade studies and optimization methodology tool kit development

A unique combination of FEM domain partitioning, Alpha STAR Multi Frontal Algorithm (AMF), and interface technology is developed for FEM trade studies. AMF allows saving of intermediate results to be used in subsequent reanalyses. Interface element methodology increases the modeling flexibility to connect independently modeled substructures. The integration of all of these technologies into a trade study tool kit cuts down the time and expense involved in structural analysis and design. Furthermore, the speed-up is enhanced by addition of parallel processing into the developed tool kit. All the technologies are briefly described and examples are given. It is shown that a tremendous amount of computation can be saved in analysis and revision of FEM models. (Author)
