MODULAR/MULTI-PURPOSE MODELLING SYSTEM FOR THE SIMULATION AND CONTROL OF WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS: AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH

ABSTRACT This paper describes the basic elements of simulator-based technologies for the analysis and control of wastewater treatment plants. Emphasis is on the development of a General Purpose Simulator for wastewater treatment plant modelling. The GPS consists of two major components: a) a screen-oriented modelling interface ( SOMI ) allowing for the graphical specification of the process flow sheet based on object-oriented concepts; and b) an interactive simulation interface ( ISI ) designed to provide interactive control of a simulation as the simulation proceeds. The GPS has been applied to a number of existing wastewater treatment plants. Developed on a SUN 3/160 workstation, the GPS is being adapted to a number of other hardware platforms.
