Integrated Structural and Electrical Design of the Linear Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine

Linear permanent magnet generators are a potentiall y useful technology for wave power applications. Typically, optimisation and comparison of these generators is based on an electromagnetic analysis with limited regard for the structural analysis. This paper presents a comparis on of two alternative designs of the double-sided linear perm anent magnet synchronous machine which includes structura l and bearing requirements for a more accurate assessment of cost and feasibility. It is shown that both cost and fea sibility depend heavily on these issues due to the large int ernal and external forces acting on the machine.
