Apparatus and method for transmitting and receiving mpeg-4 information using mpeg-2 transport stream

An apparatus and a method for transceiving an MPEG4 object using an MPEG2 TS are provided to remove a PMT(Program Map Table) and time decoding in each transmitted stream, thereby managing an AU efficiently in all streams. An apparatus for transmitting an MPEG4(Moving Picture Experts Group4) object using an MPEG2 TS(Transport Stream) comprises an AU(Access Unit) composition unit(3-2), a synchronization unit(3-4), a segment unit(3-9), and a TS multiplexing unit(3-6). The AU composition unit synthesizes plural multimedia Aus and BIFS(Binary Format for Scenes) simultaneously received. The synchronization unit adds an SL(Sync Layer) header to an AUC(Composite Access Unit) to generate an SL packet. The segment unit segments the SL packet. The TS multiplexing unit multiplexes the segmented SL packet with IOD/OD(Initial Object Descriptor/Object Descriptor) and PSI(Program Specific Information) to generate a TS packet. The TS packet includes a TS header. The TS header includes packet type information indicating which is included to the TS packet out of the segmented SL packet, the IOD/OD, and the PSI.
