Metamaterial inspired compact printed antenna for WLAN applications

In this paper we present a new possibility for antenna miniaturization, inspired on a metamaterial (MTM) approach, in order to design an innovative ultra compact printed antenna for WLAN applications. The total physical area of the antenna and the matched impedance input accounts for 1 cm2, while presenting a resonance frequency near 5.3 GHz. Besides the size considerations, other aspects were taken into account in order to consider this a promising antenna, this are a seemingly omnidirectional radiation pattern and positive gain.
