Raman spectroscopic study of the polymerization of acetylene on titanium dioxide (rutile)

trans-Polyacetylene was obtained by polymerization of acetylene at room temperature on a highly dehydroxylated surface of rutile. The Raman spectrum shows the formation of a range of different length polymers, the intensities of the skeletal bands being enhanced by the Resonance Raman Effect. The results obtained are consistent with those reported in the literature for polyacetylene obtained in a homogeneous system.
