Millimeter-wave phased array antenna with wide beam coverage

This letter presents the design and measurements of a mm-wave phased array antenna for a 5G cellular system. The 1×4 planar array antenna consisting of vertical monopoles embedded in a dielectric substrate has been simulated and fabricated with waveguide-to-stripline transitions. The 3-dB beam widths are 30° and 90° for the H-plane and E-plane, respectively. The measured scanning performance with a 28 GHz RF test platform shows that the planar array antenna can steer from -90° to +90° taking into account of the 3-dB beam width.
