Directions for Development in Hypermedia Design

This paper examines a relatively recent development in the field of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning): the emergence of network-based hypermedia learning environments (HLEs) designed to facilitate SLA. Drawing on research from a number of fields, the author attempts to identify the major factors that have influenced the development of hypermedia environments for language learning. In the above context, a number of educator created ESL websites will also be examined, in an attempt to highlight the characteristics of effective hypermedia design. The final part of this paper will identify areas of possible future development in ESL-based hypermedia design.
