THE PATTERN OF MAMMALIAN BRAIN GANGLIOSIDES—III

IN NORMAL brain, gangliosides are present as a mixture of various molecular species. A method of direct N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) determination on the spots of individual gangliosides separated by thin-layer chromatography has been found to be simple, accurate, reproducible, and suitable for analysing a large number of small size samples (SUZUKI, 1964). The optimal extraction procedures for gangliosides from brain tissue have been determined with this method. Preliminary experiments also revealed the validity of analysing post-mortem brains for gangliosides providing formalin had not been used (SUZUKI, 1965b). This analytical method has now been applied to the evaluation of the regional and developmental differences in mammalian brain ganglioside patterns.
