Experimental study on the activity of chroium oxide in the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgOsat-CrOx slag

Activities of chromium oxide in CaO-SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -MgO sat -CrO x slags have been determined for slag compositions typical for chromite ore smelting processes. The ratio of divalent chromium in proportion to total chromium content in the slag was increased by decreasing basicity, increasing temperature and decreasing oxygen partial pressure. The activity of (CrO) showed a strong positive deviation from ideality. With increasing slag basicity, the activity coefficient of (CrO) showed a strong tendency to increase. The distribution ratio of chromium between slag and metal under conditions for the production of crude stainless steel through smelting reduction has been estimated using the activity data obtained in this study.
