Applied geophysics to support the cultural heritage safeguard: A quick and non-invasive method to evaluate the dynamic response of a great historical interest building

Abstract An experimental dynamic characterization was carried out through the execution of non-invasive geophysical surveys, in order to obtain useful information for planning interventions aimed at protecting the structure. In particular, HVSR and MASW methods allowed to reconstruct the subsoil seismostratigrafic structure, and HSSR and RDM techniques was employed to obtain the structure dynamic properties. It was highlighted a complex dynamic of the building, probably linked to the numerous modifications it has undergone over the centuries. A clusters analysis, carried out on the fundamental frequency values detect in the measurement sites, allowed to identify structure parts with homogeneous dynamic behaviour. Comparing the vibration frequencies of the building with the ground ones, there seems to be no possibility that soil-structure resonance phenomena may occur.
