Emergency Response to a Heavy Damaged Giant Container Vessel

Abstract Due to the dense fog on the sea, the container vessel “XINJIANG” suffered a violent hit by the bow of another container ship near Dangang waterway, causing serious damage to tank 4#, 5# and 6#. Since there was about 210 tons of fuel in tank 5# and 6#, the vessel was severely inclined to the right, and the oil stored was very likely to spill out at any time. By conducting a specific risk assessment on the accident based on the actual maritime conditions, Shenzhen Hangpeng Marine Environmental Service Co., Ltd. soon developed a scientific, thorough emergency response plan, meanwhile adopted a series of effective methods and measures to control the situation and to prevent oil spilling out. After 21 days hard work and rescue, at last the M/V “XINJIANG” was safely escorted from Shenzhen sea area, and fortunately a potential oil spill accident was eventually successfully avoided.
