A Study of an Advanced Automotive Radial Turbine: A Design Procedure Considering Rotor Loss Distributions and Exit Flow Patterns

This paper describes analytical and experimental investigations to develop advanced radial turbines for automotive use. The performance of turbines was estimated considering radial distributions of the rotor velocity coefficient. The results of this estimation suggested that an about 5 percent improvement in turbine efficiency could be expected by optimizing the rotor exit flow patterns. To confirm these concepts, two turbines were designed and investigated experimentally. The both turbines indicated the satisfactory performance resulting from the improved rotor velocity coefficients.Copyright © 1977 by ASME
