Generating coherent THz phonons with light pulses

We present an overview of experimental work and discuss the theory of femtosecond-pulse generation of coherent optical phonons. Recent developments and differences between solids and molecular systems are emphasized. Theoretically, we focus on Raman mechanisms for the coherent driving force providing a comprehensive approach for the description of both below-gap and resonant excitation. The survey covers also polaritons and folded acoustic phonons in superlattices as well as a comparison with spontaneous Raman scattering.
