An approach to the control of robot arms with flexible transmission elements

Abstract A method is presented for obtaining dynamically coordinated control of a robot arm in which the transmission elements between the motors and the joints have significant flexibility. The method is based upon Active Force Control which replaces the usual massive computational burden by instrumentation. Simulation results for a three-link planar arm with revolute joints show the method to be effective and robust.
