Hydronic balancing is an essential measure to improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency of a hydronic radiant floor heating system. Recently, various balancing valves are integrated into the distribution manifold in order to facilitate the balancing procedure. However, despite the widespread application of the balancing valve, a comprehensive method to evaluate the valve has not been developed. This study aims at suggesting the evaluation method to examine whether a balancing valve is suitable to regulate the pressure-flow rate of the hydronic radiant floor heating system in residential buildings. To do this, the pressure-flow rate range in hydronic networks of residential buildings was investigated. Then measured flow coefficients of the balancing valve (Kv value) were applied to analyze the basic performance of the valve: the suitability of regulating range and the convenience of regulation. In addition, Simulink-based network simulation was performed to investigate the applicability of the valve. Based on the simulation results, flow quotients and cavitation number were analyzed in order to examine whether the valve can be applied successfully to the purpose of hydronic balancing for the hydronic radiant floor heating system in residential buildings.
