A survey of microcomputer use in the humanities and social sciences: A U.K. university study

A summary is given of the results and methodology of a questionnaire survey of the use of microcomputers in university departments in a selection of humanities, arts and social science disciplines in the United Kingdom. The study sought to examine the impact of microcomputers through the exploration of a number of areas. These included: (1) the number and location of micros and the extent of faculty, staff and student usage, (2) the range of applications in use, (3) the degree to which micros were networked, (4) opinions and perceptions on problems and benefits, trends and opportunities, barriers to use, etc., (5) how the issue of implementation was tackled, (6) availability of mainframe computer services, and (7) availability of formal teaching in computing for humanities and social science students.
