Maximum power point tracker based on a loss free resistor topology

A new type of maximum power point tracker (MPPT) based on the loss free resistor topology (LFR) is presented. The MPPT (of any kind) is applied in order to operate a photovoltaic array at its maximum available power, at varying illumination and load conditions. The operation of any kind of MPPT is based on the continuous control of a loss free two-port network, in such a way that the array is operated at its maximum power point. In the conventional MPPT circuit the controlled coupling network is realized by means of a switched-mode converter which exhibits controlled transformer behaviour. There are other two-port networks which can be applied for load array coupling, one of the most interesting of such kind being the loss free resistor. The loss free resistor is a two-port network with resistive input characteristic and hyperbolic output i-v curve. The power which is absorbed at the input terminals is transferred to the output and therefore losses are eliminated.
