Physical hydrology

one interested in runoff processes and related modelling techniques could have set off in early May 1981 for the International Conference on Numerical Modelling of River Channel and Overland Flow in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, crossed the Atlantic for the International Symposium on Rainfall-Runoff Modelling in Mississippi, USA, later that month, travelled on to Waterloo, Canada, for the International Symposium on Real-time Operation of Hydrosystems in June, and to Fort Collins, Colorado, for the Chapman Conference on Spatial Variability in Hydrologic Modelling in July, before returning to the UK for the International Symposium on Variations in the Global Water Budget at Oxford in August. More realistically, few would have either the necessary financial resources or stamina to participate in anything but a very limited selection from the calendar, and the scientific value of an expanding programme of international meetings
