White Paper on Modelling

This White Paper provides an overview of the modelling approaches adopted by the project partners in the EDGaR project 'Understanding Gas Sector Intra- and Inter- Market interactions' (UGSIIMI). The paper addresses three types of models: complementarity modelling, agent-based modelling and property rights theory. Each of these approaches is introduced in a systematic way – detailing purpose and goal, way to achievement, the scientific basis, applicability and limitations, outputs: typical and key results. Subsequently, the use, scope and limitations of specific models as used and developed in UGSIIMI are detailed. Commonalities and differences have been determined. From the comparison and synthesis, it is concluded that all UGSIIMI approaches intend to shed light on gas sector intra- and interconnections. Whilst modelling (parts of) the same system, they have different purposes, way to achievement, and more importantly, they differ in the system concept and modelling paradigm used.
