Dendritic surface structures on excimer-laser irradiated PET foils

A new kind of surface structure was observed on polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) foils after 248 nm KrF-excimer-laser irradiation in vacuum. The laser fluences employed were around the ablation threshold. The branched fractal structures observed have a lateral dimension in the micrometer range and a heigth of 30 to 60 nm.
