Applying a generalized host/target concept for developing subsystems in PASCAL

This paper describes several experiences in using PASCAL fo r implementing subsystems of industrial systems . Because PASCAL is a language which is available in a wide variety of machines, it wa s possible to develop some subsystems using a PASCAL which was differen t from the PASCAL for the target machine . We experimented several cases , including different PASCAL's on one machine, the same PASCAL on different machines and different PASCAL's on different machines . In this communication, we show that by taking a pragmatic view (necessar y when developing industrial software), this approach turned out to be a valuable one, leading eventually to substantial savings in developmen t costs .
