Radar bias correction based on GPS measurements for ATC applications

A new method for radar measurement bias correction is described. It is based on the use of a mode S datalink and GPS receivers, and may provide accurate bias estimations both for primary and secondary collocated radars. The proposed method distributes effectively the calibration process over the radar network, potentially reducing communication needs and computation complexity of currently used centralised bias estimation methods. The accuracy of the method is analytically predicted, based on measurement error statistics.
