FREE VIBRATIONS OF A CABLE WITH AN ATTACHED MR DAMPER – EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF AMPLITUDE DEPENDENT DAMPING

This paper presents results of experiments carried out on free vibrations of a cable with an attached magnetorheological (MR) damper. The attention is focused on the analysis of amplitude dependent damping of a cable with an MR damper operating in passive and controlled modes. In the case of the passive system, damping characteristics are nonlinear and display relevant drawbacks of the system. In contrast, in the case of the controlled system, it is revealed that the damping performance achieved with the considered control algorithms is roughly independent of vibration amplitude.
