This paper presents the basic idea, concepts, and methods of computational experiments, and discusses issues related to computer simulation, observation and explanation based emergence. Computational experiments are a natural extension and further development of modeling and simulation, resulting from recent and new advances of computing structure, algorithms, and technology, and provide effective tools for experimenting with complex systems, analyzing their behaviors and evaluating their decision-making processes.
