ABSTRACT A computer coach for information retrieval (CIR) was developed and tested in a comparative study. The design of CIR has been based on extensive observation of 14/15 years old students performing information retrieval tasks. CIR consists of five components. The Expert module contains a production system of 20 rules describing efficient information retrieval. The Student module keeps track of variables describing the student's performance. The Tutor module applies didactic principles to the selection and presentation of advice during coaching. The Interaction module executes search commands and updates the problem space. The Monitor coordinates the activities of the modules. Comparison of students being coached or not being coached showed that coaching leads to systematic searching. A systematic approach to the retrieval of information is one of the first steps on the road to becoming an expert in retrieving information in a (particular) data base.
