Meeting the health needs of people with disability living in the community

An increasing number of people with disability live in the community in Australia and internationally (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare [AIHW], 2006). Many of these individuals live in the family home, on their own, in hostels or in the traditional ‘‘group home’’ model, and receive varying levels of support and care (AIHW, 2006). There is a growing concern that many of the care and support needs of these individuals are not being adequately met, particularly in the area of health care (Avery, Goddard, & Jeeawody, 2005; Dovey & Webb, 2000; Durvasula & Beange, 2001; Jansen, Krol, Groothoff, & Post, 2004; Kerr et al., 2003). A number of factors are contributing to this difficulty in meeting the health care needs of people with disability living in the community.
