Feasible Study of Road-to-Vehicle Communication System Using LED Array and High-Speed Camera

This paper reports on a study of a parallel optical wireless communication systems using LED array transmitters and a high-speed camera as the receiver for road-to-vehicle communications in an intelligent transportation system (ITS). The authors had previously proposed a hierarchical coding scheme which allocates data to spatial frequency components depending on the priority; this scheme enables the reception of high priority data even if the receiver is far from the transmitter. They go on to describe the addition of real time information to the system, to support actual road-to-vehicle communications, and outline the results found from a driving field array using the LED array and a vehicle with a high speed camera. One of the problems encountered is difficulty synchronizing the timing to release the shutter with the lighting cycle of LEDs, i.e., the sampling of the data. They also report the bit error rate and confirm the reception of the data during driving.
