In order to study comparatively the effect of different rotor structure on the behavior of Doubly-Fed Brushless Machine (DFBM), a prototype machine has been specially designed and built. The experimental performance comparisons between the axially laminated anisotropic (ALA) reluctance rotor and cage rotor machine are presented in this paper. It is indicated that the ALA reluctance rotor DFBM exhibits fine synchronous operation and doubly-fed adjustable speed performances, however, the cage rotor DFBM has relatively better starting and asynchronous characteristics.
