This chapter introduces some of the equipment, apart from the main equipment, that is required to make a steam boiler operable. It starts by describing the necessary additional equipment to fire first the solids fuels and then the gaseous fuels. It then explains how a typical air system is designed and the role of each of its components. Next it looks at ash deposit removal from the heat exchange surfaces by sootblowers. It continues by detailing how ash is separated and collected and explains how ash is then further handled. At the end of the chapter some smaller items are explained, including the silencer. A full discussion of the role, purpose, and requirements of each piece of equipment is given to enable understanding of how they relate to the full functioning of the biomass steam boiler.
