Finite difference analysis of carrying capacity for point-supported insulating glass unit

The linear finite difference equations were solved to evaluate the carrying capacity of point-supported insulating glass units.A circular model with an inward fixed flange was used for the support points, with a general shear force introduced to realize the constraint conditions at the hinges. The calculated results agree well with experimental data. The load distribution ratio between the outer and inner pieces is strongly affected by the aspect ratio and the insulating layer thickness. The outer piece may carry more than 90% of the total load even when the outer and inner pieces have the same thicknesses. The carrying ratio of the outer piece approaches 50% when the aspect ratio exceeds 150.Load distribution curves are provided with some advise for the current code.
