Solvation: from small to macro molecules

Abstract A short description of the role of solvation in biochemical processes is presented here. Starting with the general definition of the solvation process, I show how difficult it becomes to apply this concept to macromolecules. Some attempts at studying solvation phenomena of large molecules - such as proteins - in terms of their constituent groups are critically reviewed.
