A number of global networks are in planning and are gradually coming into existence. Their main constituents are information stores or databases, computers, and telecommunications both nationally and internationally. Earlier studies have mainly been focused on optimization or simulation of traffic and loads under certain conditions. Few efforts have been made to distinguish the functions and properties that are significant for each of the different kinds of networks. The following work is an attempt at formalizing the main types of global networks in terms of structure, contents, distribution, and evolution. The nature of the situation is that of an open general system which might as well be treated as such, on the basis of past knowledge as applied to a world system. Also, the networking solution may become the loop-closing cure of something that is worse than information/message pollution, namely, “the ignorance explosion”, which keeps people with ideas separated.1
