Design of an open tolerance and complex surfaces inspection system based on the point cloud data

Complex surfaces have been more and more used in the design of parts. But inspecting complex surface parts efficiently is still a problem. The coordinate measuring machine (CMM) has an ability to inspect complex surfaces of a part, but the efficiency or the speed of inspection is low and the size of part sometime is limited because of the dimension of CMM's working platform. An inspection system has been made for complex surface in paper. The point cloud data have been calculated by triangulation method and phase shift method. The geometry modeler as kernel is used to analyse the CAD model and calculate the deviation between the part and the CAD model. The repeatability and reliability of the inspection system are experimented to satisfy the demand of open tolerance (±0.1mm). Finally, a lens of an automobile lamp has been inspected and the result proves the system efficiency.
