Edelstahlwarke Witten-Krefeld GmbH operates a bloom/heavy plate line in Witten with an annual production of around 250,000 t. It is used to manufacture semi-finished products, mainly in dimensions of 55 to 250 round and 50 to 320 mm square, from continuous and ingot castings. Production comprises stainless structural steel, antifriction bearing steel. RSH and tool steels. In the course of extensive modernisation in 1999 and 2000n significant parts of the rolling mill have been renovated and redesigned. The existing furnace system for heating of the blooms also had to be replaced [1].
