Biosensors for explosives: State of art and future trends

Abstract Explosives sensing is currently one of the most pressing and significant concerns in homeland security, antiterrorism, and environmental protection. Biosensors can often provide an outstanding specificity and sensitivity for explosives, utilizing biological or bio-mimic recognition components such as antibodies, aptamers, and molecularly imprinted polymers. Despite intriguing properties and fast development, the biosensors-based explosive detection has not been reviewed in the past decade. Herein, the focus of this review is towards advances of biosensors of explosive, emphasizing quantitative biosensors in the past ten years, with the readers being referred to earlier or other technique related reviews. The basics of explosives, the qualitative biosensing (based on animals, electronic noses, and genetically engineered microorganisms), the quantitative biosensing (based on antibody, peptide aptamer, and molecularly imprinted polymers), and future perspectives are discussed in detail.
