A new automobile radar based on the six-port phase/frequency discriminator

A new range/relative-speed sensor for automobiles is shown. Based on the six-port phase/frequency discriminator, it determines distance and Doppler frequency by means of the phase difference between transmitted and received signals. It presents several advantages compared with conventional FM/CW sensors. Low cost and compact size can also be achieved. The principle of operation, the developed prototype, and test results are described.
