This paper presents a case study in the application of innovative technology in the design of the new Las Vegas Area Computer Traffic System (LVACTS). By employing open communications standards and architecture, and by carefully assessing real reliability needs, the designers of the new Las Vegas Area Computer Traffic System have formulated a multi-medium communications approach that will allow widespread data and video signals to be returned to the control center extremely cost-effectively. At an average cost of a little over $18,000 per intersection, the project will provide advanced capabilities for a traditional cost. Also, maintenance of the system is made easier by employing wireless devices that do not require inground maintenance of linear infrastructure.
