Fitting 3D curves to unorganized data points using deformable curves

Many articles have addressed the problem of fitting curves to data points. However, most of them are subject to a restriction that the data points must be ordered. Here, we discuss the problem of generating a piecewise continuous parametric curve which provides a “good” fit of a “smooth” curve to a set of unorganized data points. The concept of an elastically deformable curve attracted toward data points by spring-like forces is used to seek the optimal shape which strikes a balance between fit and fairness.
