USE OF THE NATIONWIDE PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION STUDY TO CALCULATE EXPOSURE

The 1977 Nationwide Personal Transportation Study can be used to calculate exposure in various--by vehicle-miles, passenger-miles, age and sex of occupants. The NPTS data were used to calculate annual passenger-miles per person by age and sex. They were also combined with data from the Fatal Accident Reporting System to calculate fatality rates per 100-million passenger-miles by age. The results rather precisely show travel risks faced by male vs. female occupants of various ages.
